Pressure & Volume: Boyle's Law

What happens when you squeeze a gas into a smaller space?

Use the slider below to change the volume (width) of the box.

Shrink the box and watch what happens.

The particles hit the walls more often because they have less room. The pressure goes up!

Now expand the box back.

Bigger volume → fewer wall collisions → lower pressure.

This inverse relationship is Boyle's Law:

P ∝ 1/V   (at constant temperature)

Double the volume, halve the pressure. The product P × V stays roughly constant as long as the temperature doesn't change.
